Sustainability on the Move

Durham 2019 transportation emissions

These emissions were largely driven by light duty vehicles (sedans, coups, SUVs, small vans, and pickup trucks), which accounted for 82.8% of Durham’s transportation emissions.

You can help lower Durham's emissions by:

Reducing your miles driven/Carpooling

The average passenger car in the United States produces just under one pound of carbon dioxide per mile traveled. (US DOT, 2010). A four-person carpool produces 75% less greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile than the average single-occupancy private vehicle.

Choosing no or low-emission options

Active transportation options, i.e., human-powered transportation, include walking, biking, and skateboarding. Read about Durham’s efforts to improve bike access here.

Public transportation options in Durham include the bus and train, which each produce less greenhouse gas emissions per passenger than a conventional motor vehicle.

  • Local buses Wildcat Transit and UNH Campus Connector are available to the public at low or no cost to the rider. Read about additional options here.
  • Traveling outside of Durham? PanAm provides rail freight service that runs from Brunswick, ME, to Boston, MA, and has a stop in Durham on the UNH campus.

Going electric

Replacing your car with an electric vehicle will save you money and reduce your impact on the environment. Durham currently has electric vehicle charging stations downtown in the Pettee Brook metered lot and at the Durham Public Library.
