Absentee Ballots
Absentee Ballots
You may vote by absentee ballot in any election if you are unable to vote in person for any of the reasons below:
- You will be out of town on Election Day
- You have a religious observance that prevents in-person voting
- You have a physical disability or illness
- You have a work obligation, or you must care for a child or adult during all polling hours
- You are confined in a penal institution due to a misdemeanor conviction or while awaiting trial
- You are a participant in the Attorney General’s Address Confidentiality Program or are protected by a Domestic Violence Protective Order
- The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm, blizzard, or ice storm warning for your town or ward on Election Day and you are concerned about traveling safely
How to Request an Absentee Ballot
- You may request an absentee ballot up to six months before an election
Applications are available:
- In person at the Durham Town Clerk’s Office
- Online (download the application at the bottom of this page)
Request Deadlines
Submitting an Absentee Application
- By mail: Must be received by 12:00 p.m. the day before the election
- In person: By 5:00 p.m. the day before the election
Returning Your Completed Ballot
- By hand: By 5:00 p.m. the day before the election
- By mail: By 5:00 p.m. on Election Day
⚠️ Important: Voters may not return their own absentee ballot to the polling place on Election Day.

Absentee Voter Registration
If you meet the state's requirements and qualifications and are unable to register in person, you may register to vote by absentee. Visit our Absentee Voter Registration page for more information.
Accessible Absentee Voting
If you have a print disability, you may apply for an Accessible Electronic Absentee Ballot. Visit our Voting with Disabilities page for information on how to apply.
Effective September 30, 2025, voters applying for an absentee ballot will need to use the following instructions and forms and include the required proof of identity (noted on the forms) when returning them to their local town/city clerk.
