Pay Station Frequently Asked Questions
With the installation of the parking Kiosks in the downtown area, the Durham Police would like to provide some facts about them and how the parking system is designed to work. The kiosks are a “pay and display” system where customers deposit coins, paper currency, debit or credit
cards and receive a receipt that displays the allocated time period that they paid for allowing their vehicle to be parked in a designated space. The receipt must be placed on the interior dashboard so that the parking and police personnel can easily read it from outside the vehicle or the vehicle will be in violation.
Parking enforcement will occur Monday through Friday 8:00 AM through 8:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM through 4:00 PM, Sunday's and holidays excepted.
It's all about location:
Downtown Parking Areas
Kiosks in the immediate downtown business area are designed to create turnover and ensure that spaces are available for customers. For these short-term, shopping, dining parking spaces, parking is free for the first hour. A customer can select the free hour and receive a receipt that states the time of expiration. Customers can purchase 2-hours of parking at these locations for $1.00 (first hour free, 2nd $1.00). The most a person can purchase is 2-hours! If you are a Durham resident displaying a current and valid sticker acquired at Town Hall, the free hour parking ticket
will be recognized by the Parking Enforcement Officer as a 2-hour free parking ticket. As an example a Durham resident can get free parking for 2-hours and purchase an additional hour for $1.00 for a total of 3-hours for only $1.00. ALL PARKING IS REQUIRED TO DISPLAY A RECEIPT.
The pricing for the Pettee Brook Parking Lot (north) and Pettee Brook Lane (southerly side from Madbury Road to Rosemary Lane) is $1.00 per hour with a maximum of 2 hours.
Exterior Parking Areas
Kiosks in closer proximity to the University of New Hampshire allow for parking to be purchased in multiple hours up to 12-hours if the customer so desires! For these long term areas, pricing is $1.50 per hour. The price structure applies to kiosks located on Main Street in front of the President’s House, Garrison Avenue, Pettee Brook Lane (northerly and southerly sides from Rosemary Lane to Main Street) and Madbury Road (westerly side between Pettee Brook Lane and Garrison Avenue). There is no change to the Business Parking Permit system which allows permit holders to park in both of the Pettee Brook lots.
