Private Burying Places

Please note that the Town of Durham has over 75 old family burial plots, graveyards and cemeteries dating back to the late mid-1600's, most on private property.  About 45 of these have trust funds established for them, ranging from under $100 to a few thousand dollars, from which only the interest income can be spent by the Trustees of the Trust Funds under state law.  Responsibility for the care and maintenance of these burial grounds lies with the heirs of those buried there, following state law and guidelines concerning access across private property. Some (but not all) old burial ground locations are shown on the Town's tax maps.
