DURHAM
POLICE DEPARTMENT 2008 PARKING STATUS REPORT

The Durham Police Department has
completed its third review of parking in Durham. Previous updates were presented in 2002
and 2005. This report provides an overview of the Town ‘s current parking
status.  In addition, it offers tangible enhancements as well as generating
long-range visions for addressing the stress and competing issues surrounding
parking in Durham, specifically as it relates to the
downtown area. To view the complete 2008 Parking Status Report, click HERE.

Durham
Public Library/Durham Town Office Space Needs Assessment
Report

In March 2006, the Town of Durham hired Sumner Davis Architects, Inc. of Portsmouth to conduct an
analysis of the current and future space needs of the Durham Town Office, the
Durham Public Library, and the feasibility of constructing a combined
Library/Town Office facility at the present Town Office site.  On Monday
evening, July 3, 2006, Kelly Davis of Sumner Davis Architects presented Council
members with the findings of the Space Needs Assessment.  A copy of the
report is available on line on the Town web site at www.ci.durham.nh.us, or by clicking
HERE.

DAIRY
BAR AND TRAIN STATION REOPENING

The UNH Dairy Bar and Durham/UNH
train station will reopen for business on Monday, August 11, 2008 now that
renovations on both are complete. The Dairy Bar will be open Monday through
Friday, 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM and weekends from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM with the

Workmen's
Compensation and Property/Liability Claims
Update

At the July 29th Joint Loss
Management Committee the members reviewed the Town's workmen's compensation and
property/liability claims for the second quarter 2008. The Town
experienced four workmen's compensation claims bringing the total for the
year to eight. All of the second quarter claims were considered minor in nature
(i.e., twisted ankle, bee stings, debris in eye). In addition, the Town
experienced two property/liability claims involving Town vehicles. In both
of these accidents the Town was not at fault as the vehicles were hit by another
motorist while they were parked and the employees were out of the vehicle. This
small number of claims reflect positively on the Town staff who endeavor to
provide a safe and healthy work environment for all
employees.

REPAIR
OF PETTEE BROOK
LANE SEWER MANHOLE

This week a major repair was
made to a sewer manhole on Pettee
Brook Lane between Rosemary Lane and Main Street.
This emergency repair corrected a sinking and deteriorating sewer manhole.
The project took slightly longer than anticipated, but overall went very
well.  Due to the excessive water from the rain, the contractor was
not able to compact the material as needed, thereby postponing the
paving.  The Department of Public Works crew will attempt to pave and
patch the site tomorrow, weather permitting.  Thank you for your
continued patience and cooperation during this repair
project.

only

ENERGY
SAVING TIPS

ü
If you have a room air conditioner,
you can save up to 10% on electricity and carbon emissions if you install it on
the north side of the house.

ü
If you have an air conditioner,
setting the thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer, lowers
your overall cooling bill.  You’ll save about 10% on your air conditioning
energy for every 5o F you raise the
thermostat.

FROM
HISTORY IN AN OYSTERSHELL – 1600 – 1976

“1800 – The last water-powered mill
to operate was the Jenkins Mill, located at the south end of the existing dam.
Cider, leather, gravestones and shingles were products. The sound of the iron
water wheel could be heard far down the river on a quiet day. The mill collapsed
about 1949.”

Have a nice
weekend.
