Julian Smith - Town Council Candidate
JULIAN SMITH - Town Council
246 Packers Falls Road
Education: Studied American Literature at Tulane and Columbia
Occupation: Retired professor of English
Years as Durham Resident: My wife and I moved to Durham in 1965 when I joined the UNH faculty; we kept a permanent home here when I moved on to other teaching jobs in 1969.
Previous Service on Governmental/Community/Civic Boards, Commissions, Committees, or Organizations:
I have served on the Town Council for the last nine years and have served on a number of boards, including the Planning Board and Conservation Commission. I also served two terms on the Durham Public Library Board of Trustees (2004-2010) and am on the Board of Directors of the Durham Historic Association.
Reason for Interest in Running for Elected Office:
In addition to continuing to work on such issues as the future of our downtown, preserving our historic Mill Pond and the UNH outdoor pool, I would work to provide more housing for young families and to encourage the expansion of local agriculture and regional public transportation.
Additional Background Information:
My wife Monica (known to family and friends as Hannah) and I have been married for fifty years; we have three children and five grandchildren; we live in a house we built with our own hands on the foundation of an old barn overlooking a hay meadow. I dig ponds and create wetlands and waterfalls for recreation and enjoy giving tours of what I call Bayou New Hampshire.
