However, it may not have occurred to you that this is but a second assault on our neighborhood: the first was the sports complex on Coe Drive. This meant that instead of a grassy field and small grove of mature trees, we are now met every day by the view of several fences, the unsightly back-side of a huge scoreboard, artificial turf, and lights that would not be out of place in a prison yard. We are particularly concerned about the loss of the trees. Despite their appearance on the plans, and assurances during the construction that they would be retained, we were appalled to find one day that they were gone, every single one. The school district is “sympathetic,” and has offered to plant a few shrubs along the fence at some unknown future date, if the budget allows. You can imagine that we might be skeptical about similar promises for Young Drive. I would like to encourage you to put in place some mechanism that would provide a strong incentive for the developers to take whatever measures were necessary to retain the trees that shield their proposed development from our view.
