By highway, rail, air or water, people and products
get from Durham to virtually anywhere else (or the other way around)
with ease.
By land, Interstate 95 is the primary access to the
town from the north and south. State Highway Routes 108, 101, 4
and 33 provide convenient access from adjoining areas.
The Boston & Maine railroad provides rail freight
service. The line runs through Durham, within the UNH campus, and
passenger rail service on the Amtrak
Downeaster lets you travel from Portland to Boston (yes, there's
a stop right in Durham!).
Air transportation offers a number of choices. Boston's
Logan Airport,
the regions largest, is 50 miles to the south, and provides both
domestic and international passenger and freight service through
a variety of carriers. Manchester
Airport, 35 miles east, is smaller, sometimes more convenient,
and has undergone a $65 million expansion. It also offers freight
and passenger service. Less than 14 miles away, Pease
International Tradeport promises additional air service in the
future. Smaller airports in Rochester, NH (17 miles) and Portland,
ME (60 miles) offer additional options.
Transportation by water is also just 14 miles away
at the Port
Authority of New Hampshire in Portsmouth. Easily accessed by
truck, highway and rail, it is the closest United States point to
Europe and the only ice-free deep water port north of Boston. A
major expansion of the port is currently underway.
Public bus transportation is available with destinations
throughout neighboring Seacoast towns and the main campus of the
University of New Hampshire in Durham.
