Carolyn Singer - Library Trustee
CAROLYN SINGER - Library Trustee
5 Woodridge Road
Education: BA Art History & History; MA in Early American History.
Occupation: For more than thirty-five years I served as a museum professional (curator, educator, and executive director), but about ten years ago left the museum field to become a fundraiser. I worked for a few years at FIRST Robotics (Dean Kamen’s nonprofit promoting STEM), but now raise funds for a homeless day shelter in Boston.
Years as Durham Resident: 30 years
Previous Service on Governmental/Community/Civic Boards:
After serving as an Alternate for a number of years, I was elected as a Trustee of The Durham Public Library in 2015. This will be my second elected term.
My husband, Mark Popecki and I started the FIRST Robotics team at the Oyster River High School and I secured any needed funding to support team activities. And, for three years I worked with Tracey Harvey in Mechanical Engineering at UNH as Co-Manager of the FIRST LEGO Seacoast Qualifying Tournament.
I served on the awards committee of the American Association for State and Local History for six years. This committee selected outstanding museum publications, exhibitions, and programing for national recognition. I also served on the Essex National Heritage Commission in Salem, MA.
Reason for Interest in Running for Elected Office:
In 2017 the Trustees of the Durham Public Library hired a highly competent and professional Library Director Rose Bebris. With our physical building and talented staff, we should be a leader among libraries in New Hampshire. I want to continue to make improvements to our operations and support our work with the community in implementing new ideas – many of which can be grant funded.
My children Margot and Simon Popecki were avid library users. I’d love to make sure other children can take advantage of all the extensive programming done by the library – and I’d like to see more STEM for middle school students.
